Peter Hildick-Smith is President of Codex-Group LLC. Founded in 2004, the firm pioneered book audience research. Codex tracks and forecasts digital book trends for book publishers, retailers and technology companies, using quantitative online research as a foundation for business strategy development. The company’s proprietary, digital Book Preview and Author Equity pre-publication market test programs help publishers and authors boost new book discovery, purchase conversion rates, expand audiences and increase sales—supporting the successful publication of numerous New York Times bestsellers.
Prior to founding Codex, Hildick-Smith worked at GE Capital Global Consumer Finance, as Chief Marketing Officer, UK, and SVP, Customer Management, North America, supporting clients including Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Exxon/Mobil, Gap, and JC Penney. At Bertelsmann’s Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, he was VP, Merchandising, and VP, Marketing for the Young Readers, School, College and Library businesses. He lectures regularly at The Wharton School, sits on the Wharton Digital Press Board of Advisors, and is a research advisor to the National Endowment for the Arts. He has an MBA in Marketing from The Wharton School (1981), and a BA in Comparative Literature from the University of Pennsylvania (1976).
