Mike Shatzkin

Founder and CEO, The Idea Logical Company

NY, United States

Mike Shatzkin runs a strategic consulting firm (The Idea Logical Company), is a partner in a conference business (Publishers Launch Conferences), and is the program chair for the biggest annual gathering of trade publishers discussing digital change (Digital Book World). He is also the author of The Shatzkin Files, a blog he began over three years ago.

In the 50 years since Shatzkin's first publishing job as a sales clerk in the then brand-new paperback department of Brentano's Bookstore on 5th Avenue, he's written several books, agented and packaged them, and has also worked in production, marketing, and sales. He has a deep and granular knowledge of how publishing works and a first-person acquaintance with most of the leading players on trade publishing through the English-speaking world going back several decades.

Since the mid-1990s, Shatzkin has been at the forefront of analyzing and forecasting the book business's digital transition. Among the trends he identified before they were empirically apparent were verticalization (publishers specializing by audience), the rise of ebooks for immersive reading, and the decline of bookstore shelf space. His consulting clients have included most major publishers, retailers (Barnes & Noble), wholesalers (Ingram), and a host of service providers to the industry (NetGalley). He is a frequent speaker at publishing conferences worldwide and his company runs conferences at BookExpo America and Frankfurt Book Fair.
